Pigments

Minerals and clays foraged by Russell Burden from the Lossenham landscape were finely ground into pigments using a pestle and mortar and then pushed through a fine mesh to produce even finer particles. These particles were combined with a refined linseed oil and worked with a glass muller to become a stable oil colour suitable for painting and printmaking. Interestingly the properties of each colour varied widely from almost transparent to opaque, from harsh and gritty to a fine smooth flow, thus each pigment informed me of its role within a composition and by doing so relayed yet more aspects of the Lossenham landscape. I found the resulting prints and paintings, being informed by this materiality, are often free to convey a deeper understanding of the landscape they are representing.
