Totem Cross

Totem cross is a ceramic sculpture constructed from the natural clay deposited at Lossenham and decorated with slip gazes made from the minerals foraged from around the Priory site. Symbolising the arrival of the Carmelite missionaries, it is also a representation of beliefs from before the Carmelite arrival. Within its form concentric lines are scratched into is surface, reminiscent of layers of iron deposited in the coloured strata seen within iron minerals deposited at Lossenham. The marks also embody the importance of iron to the early settlements at Lossenham.
